Should You Add Lavender to Your Diet?

The short answer from a dietitian

Using lavender as an ingredient in a salad

There’s a reason lavender is commonly used in shampoos and lotions. Its sweet aromas evoke relaxation and a sense of calm. But that’s not the only way you can use it! Much more than your favorite soap, lavender is a sensational herb for your mind and body.

In fact, lavender is an incredibly versatile herb when used for cooking. It has a sweet, floral flavor with notes of lemon and even citrus.

Health benefits of lavender include:

  • Supplies polyphenols to help reduce bacteria responsible for bloating and poor digestion.
  • Contains phytonutrients, which may boost immunity.
  • Its fragrance soothes headaches, improves sleep and can decrease cortisol levels (that’s the stress hormone).
  • One study even showed that lavender oil was effective for treating hair loss.

It’s easy to incorporate lavender into your food, too. Try pairing lavender with lemon or honey in bran muffins or with whole-wheat bread. Also try it as an herbal tea or muddle it into drinks. (Pro-tip: Try grinding it or straining it.)

Add this herb into your culinary arsenal and reap its benefits!
